Map of the atoll |
The Helen Reef (Engl. Helen's Reef ), also Hotsarihie called, is one in flood almost completely flushed Atoll in the south Pacific Ocean . It is located about 75 km east of the island of Tobi and, like this, belongs to the administrative area of Hatohobei of the island republic of Palau .
The atoll is 25 km long and almost 10 km wide. Including the lagoon (103 km²) and the numerous shallow coral reefs , it has a total area of around 163 km².
In 1767, the HMS Swallow ran under Captain Philip Carteret from New Guinea to Manila (Philippines) and "discovered" islands in the southwest of Palau, such as the Helen Reef on September 8th.
From 1901 until the First World War , the reef was part of German New Guinea .
In the north of the atoll, the area of Helen Island is included. There is a permanently manned ranger station on the island. Therefore the Helen Reef is counted among the nine inhabited islands of the Republic of Palau.
