The island of Marathos has an area of 0.355 km². It is located about 16 km east of Patmos and 5 km north of Lipsi . The shortest distance to the main island of the Arki archipelago is about 600 m, to the main town and port of Arki more than 2 km. About 160 m from the northwest coast is the island of Strongyli (Στρογγύλη) and one kilometer west of Agryllousa (Αγρυλλούσα).

The landscape is determined by the typical representatives of the Phrygana . The eponymous fennel (μάραθο, Maratho) is rarely found today due to excessive animal husbandry.

history

The original settlement lies east of the harbor bay on a saddle. In addition to a barrel-vaulted building from the Byzantine period, there are also the ruins of the settlement, which was abandoned at the end of the 20th century, and a chapel of Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος Μαράθι).

In 2011 Marathos is permanently inhabited by five people. The residents keep goats and grow some vegetables for their own consumption. The excursion guests from Lipsi , Leros (irregular in recent years due to lack of demand) and Patmos and the sailors have taverns, some with overnight accommodation, available.

Power is supplied by a small photovoltaic system and also by an Arki submarine cable. The drinking water comes from Rhodes by tanker .
