Maravatío de Ocampo or just Maravatío is a city with approx. 40,000 inhabitants and the capital of a municipality (municipio) with approx. 90,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Michoacán .
Location and climate
Maravatío is a good 90 km (driving distance) northeast of Morelia , the capital of the state, at an altitude of approx. 2020 m ; to Mexico City it is approx. 200 km in a southeast direction. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 845 mm / year) falls predominantly in the summer half-year.

The vast majority of the population is of Indian descent; Mestizos are also numerous .
economy
In earlier times the residents of Maravatío lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient . Gradually, small traders, artisans and service providers of all kinds also settled in the city. Agriculture is still the basis of the community's economic life; today, however, there are also several smaller industrial companies (mostly suppliers).
history
According to tradition, members of the Otomí tribe settled here in pre-Hispanic times ; later came Tarascan added. In 1540, the Spanish viceroy Antonio de Mendoza supposedly founded the city to protect central Mexico from the Chichimecs .
Attractions
- The main attraction in the center of the city is the Jardín , a park surrounded by arcades with benches, street vendors, etc.
- The first parish church existed as early as the 16th century; the current church of San Juan Bautista, however, largely comes from a renovation of the 18th century. The upper tower floors made of slightly reddish stone and the portal zone are remarkable . The single-nave building has a transept and a crossing dome .
