history

According to tradition, members of the Otomí tribe settled here in pre-Hispanic times ; later came Tarascan added. In 1540, the Spanish viceroy Antonio de Mendoza supposedly founded the city to protect central Mexico from the Chichimecs .

Attractions

  • The main attraction in the center of the city is the Jardín , a park surrounded by arcades with benches, street vendors, etc.
  • The first parish church existed as early as the 16th century; the current church of San Juan Bautista, however, largely comes from a renovation of the 18th century. The upper tower floors made of slightly reddish stone and the portal zone are remarkable . The single-nave building has a transept and a crossing dome .
