Marc Edwards (* 23. July 1949 in New York City ) is an American free jazz - drummer , composer and bandleader.

Edwards attended Manhattan Junior High School and played in the school band. Under the influence of the music of John Coltrane and Sun Ra , he began to be interested in free jazz . In 1968 he was heard on a recording of the drum formation Warriors Drum & Bugle Corps ; then he attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston , where he met David S. Ware . He later worked on his album Birth of a Being ( HatHut Records 1977). In 1970/71 he formed the Apogee trio with Ware and the pianist Cooper-Moorewho performed frequently at the Boston Jazz Workshop . On his return to New York, he played in the Cecil Taylor Unit, with which he went on a European tour in 1976 ( Dark Unto Themselves ). In the 1980s he founded his own formation in which Matthew Shipp and Rob Brown played. A first album was Black Queen , in which Fred Hopkins was a guest. In addition, he worked on David S. Wares recordings for Silkheart Records from 1988 to 1991 .

In 1993 he recorded the album Tme & Space, Vol.1 (Alphaphoncs) with Rob Brown and performed with Charles Gayle at the Knitting Factory . In 1996, CIMP was followed by his album Red Sprite & Blue Jets , on which tenor saxophonist Sabir Mateen and bassist Hillard Greene participated; the themes of the album were reminiscent of the late recordings of John Coltrane around 1965/66, such as his One Down, One Up . He also worked with Paul Flaherty in the 2000s .
