Marc Martí Totxo (born May 14, 1531 in Alaior , Menorca ; † November 14, 1617 ibid) was a Spanish theologian and an influential figure in the Roman Catholic Church in Spain .

Life

Marc Martí, born into a wealthy family, studied theology and graduated from the University of Valencia with a doctorate in 1557 .

In 1558, when the Ottoman navy conquered and plundered Ciutadella on the Balearic island of Menorca , his father, mother and siblings were captured. He himself was not on the island at the time. When the Ottoman fleet reached the south of France, the mother was able to escape, but his father and siblings were deported to Constantinople . His father Antoni passed away during the trip trying to rescue his children. This event shaped the further life of Marc Marti.

In 1560 Marc Martí he was appointed to the management of the Universitat de Menorca to advance applications to King Felipe II . In 1563 he traveled to the capital Constantinople to negotiate the release of around 4,000 prisoners from Menorca.

In Constantinople he succeeded, with great difficulty, in ransoming about eighty prisoners. During the operation he was charged as a spy and imprisoned, but he escaped. Marc Martí returned to Spain at the beginning of 1565. The allegations of the Ottoman Empire for espionage were justified, however, because he sent several highly explosive reports to the Spanish royal family during that time.

King Felipe II recognized him for his services by appointing Marc Martí Totxo provost of Menorca in 1565 . He became the highest authority figure on the island, which at that time belonged to the diocese of Mallorca . In the following years, Marc Martí became the most important person in the Roman Catholic Church on the Balearic Islands. He was not only provost and rector of Santa María de Ciutadella , but also island commissioner of the Inquisition and vicar general of the Bishop of Mallorca.

At the old age of 86 he died on November 14th 1617 on the island of Menorca.
