Marc Melitz

Marc J. Melitz (* 1968 ) is an American economist and professor of economics at Princeton University and has been at Harvard University since mid-2009 .

Life

Melitz received a PhD (2000) and MA (1997) in economics from the University of Michigan , an MSBA in Operations Research from the University of Maryland (1992) and a BA in mathematics from Haverford College (1989).

In addition to his Princeton position, Melitz has also been a Research Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research and a Research Associate with the National Bureau of Economic Research since 2000 . Before joining Princeton, he was an assistant professor at Harvard University from 2000 to 2006. He has also been co-author of the standard work International Economics with Paul Krugman and Maurice Obstfeld since the 9th edition .

Melitz is best known for his Econometrica publication The Impact of Trade on Intra-Industry Reallocations and Aggregate Industry Productivity . In this paper he examines the relationship between productivity and export activities of companies (company heterogeneity). The Melitz model is an important contribution to the more recent foreign trade theory and represents an extension of Krugman's (1979/1980) model to include company heterogeneity but also market entry costs.

Since 2016 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations . In 2017 Melitz was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
