Marc Sabat

Marc Sabat (born September 22, 1965 in Kitchener , Ontario ) is a Canadian composer who has lived in Berlin since 1999.

Works

Marc Sabat has written music for concert performances, as well as videos and installations with acoustic instruments. He moves in the field of computer-generated live electronics , inspired by research into sound and perception , by American folk, experimental music and minimal music .

His music was performed at the Bludenzer Days of Contemporary Music , the Donaueschinger Musiktage , MaerzMusik , the Darmstadt Summer Courses and the Carnegie Hall .

Sabat also works with visual artists and fellow composers, such as his brother, the painter and filmmaker Peter Sabat, with John Oswald, Martin Arnold, Nicolas Fernandez, Matteo Fargion, Wolfgang von Schweinitz and Stefan Bartling. Since 2006 Marc Sabat has been working on a series that stages musical compositions with works by the Düsseldorf-based artist Lorenzo Pompa.

research

Since the early 1990s, Sabat has been researching the field of harmony on the pair of concepts theory and musical practice (pure tuning). Together with Wolfgang von Schweinitz, he designed a method for designating the natural mood - the so-called Extended Helmholtz-Ellis JI Pitch Notation . He empirically investigated intervals with string and wind instruments and presented a list of tuneable intervals - interval relationships of electronic and acoustic instruments within a 3-octave space that can easily be tuned by ear. Such intervals are prominently represented in a number of more recent compositions and at the same time form the basis of self-tuning algorithms ( Micromaelodeon ). The latest version was in April 2009 in a Haken Audio Continuum fingerboard implemented and programmed in Max / MSP .

Studies, teaching, artist residencies

Sabat studied at the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School in New York and took private lessons with Malcolm Goldstein , James Tenney and Walter Zimmermann . He took courses in electronic and computer music at McGill University . From 2008 to 2009 he was a participant in a pilot project at the Graduate School for the Arts and Sciences, initiated by the Berlin University of the Arts .

He teaches composition, acoustics and experimental intonation at the University of the Arts and has been a guest artist at the California Institute of the Arts , the Escola Superior in Barcelona, ​​the Janáček Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Brno and the Paris Conservatory .

In autumn 2010 he was artist in residence at Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, followed by an annual scholarship in 2011 at Villa Massimo in Rome. He was a scholarship holder of the Akademie Schloss Solitude (1997–98) and the Künstlerhaus Edenkoben .

Career as a violinist

Since the beginning of the 1980s, Sabat has also been active as an interpreter on violin and adapted viola, primarily in the field of American experimental music of the 20th century. He recorded CDs with music by James Tenney , Morton Feldman , Christian Wolff and Maria de Alvear, among others . In the 1990s, living in Toronto, he formed a duo with the pianist Stephen Clarke and performed with the Modern Quartet and array music. He largely gave up a concert career in favor of composing.
