Marc Waelkens
Marc Waelkens (born April 12, 1948 in Waregem ) is a Belgian classical archaeologist .
Waelkens studied archeology and art history at the University of Ghent and has participated in excavations in Greece , Syria and Turkey since 1969 . He received his doctorate in 1976. He then worked as a lecturer at the KU Leuven . In 1986 he was appointed professor and head of the archeology, art history and musicology department at this university. He retired in 2013.
In 1982, as part of a British research project, Waelkens came to the ancient city of Sagalassos for the first time, not far from what is now Ağlasun in the Turkish province of Burdur . The exploration of Sagalassos would be his life's work. In 1990, systematic excavations and partial restorations began under his leadership . Since then, Waelkens has coordinated a working group of scientists from various disciplines that continues the research every year; when he retired in 2013, he gave up directing the excavation.
In 2008 the Belgian king raised Waelkens to the nobility with the personal title of knight.
