Marcel Bataillon (born May 20, 1895 in Dijon , † June 4, 1977 in Paris ) was a French Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Marcel Bataillon was the son of the zoologist Eugène Bataillon (1864–1953). He attended the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and graduated from the École normal supérieure (1913). In 1920 he passed the Agrégation for Spanish. From 1915 to 1922 he studied at the École des Hautes Études hispaniques et ibériques in Madrid (1916–1918 military service); from 1922 to 1926 he was a French lecturer at the University of Lisbon . From 1926 to 1929 he taught Spanish at the University of Bordeaux , then until 1937 he was Maître de conférences at the University of Algiers .

In 1937 he completed his habilitation with the two Thèses Érasme et l'Espagne. Recherches sur l'histoire spirituelle du XVIe siècle (Paris 1937; 3 vols., Geneva 1991 [with list of publications], 1998; Spanish, Mexico 1950, Madrid 1966, 1979, 1983, 1986) and (ed.) Juan de Valdés, Diálogo de doctrina cristiana (Coimbra 1924) and was professor of Spanish at the Sorbonne until 1945 , from 1945 to 1965 professor of the languages ​​and literatures of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America at the Collège de France (from 1955 also administrator). In 1952 he became a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . In 1967 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .

He was the editor of the Hispanic Bulletin and the Revue de littérature comparée . In 1963, Bataillon was a founding member of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (FSMH).

Bataillon was a prisoner of the Royallieu concentration camp from July 1 to August 16, 1941 .
