Marcel Rieder (born March 19, 1862 in Thann , † March 30, 1942 in Villiers-sous-Grez ) was a French painter .

Rieder came from a respected Alsatian family - his grandfather Jean Jacques Rieder (1778-1852) was a pastor in Strasbourg . Marcel Rieder studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris . In 1894 he became a member of the Société des Artistes Français and exhibited annually in their "Salon" until 1939.

Rieder's style of painting remained realistic throughout his life, his style was initially characterized by symbolism, for example his painting "Dante weeping Beatrice" (Musée de Mulhouse). Subsequently, Rieder became known for his sparingly illuminated intimate interiors . As a member of the Paris Bach Society, Rieder met Albert Schweitzer . His portrait of the doctor is shown in the museum dedicated to Schweitzer.

Rieder spent most of his life in Paris, but in 1927 he retired to Busseu near Fontainebleau . In the late phase of life, with diminishing eyesight and trembling hands, Rieder switched to an "impressionistic" style of painting.
