Marcellin Theeuwes

Marcellin Theeuwes OCart (* as Jacobus "Jac" Johannes Maria Theeuwes on May 12, 1936 in Gilze en Rijen near Breda , Netherlands ; † January 2, 2019 in Méounes-lès-Montrieux ) was a Catholic religious .

Life

His real name is Jacobus "Jac" Johannes Maria Theeuwes, he was born as the youngest of seven brothers. In the then Cistercian Abbey of Marienkroon he got to know and appreciate the spirituality of the Carthusians through theological studies . On December 7, 1961, he joined the religious order of the French Carthusians in the Carthusian monastery of Sélignac , where he received the religious name Marcellinus . On June 25, 1966, after completing his philosophical and theological training, he was ordained a priest . He made his solemn profession on December 8th of the same year . In June 1973 he was elected prior in the Charterhouse of Mougères . In November 1977 he came to the Charterhouse in Montrieux in the Var region , which he headed as Prior from April 1983.

After the health-related resignation of the Order General Dom André Poisson , who died in 2005, he was elected Prior of the Great Charterhouse in June 1997 and thus the new Minister General of the Carthusian monks , the highest authority of the Carthusian Order. With his election he became the 72nd successor of St. Bruno and at the same time the fourth Dutchman in this office. In 2012 he asked the Pope for health reasons to release him from his position as superior, a request that Pope Benedict XVI. At the end of August 2012. François-Marie Velut was elected as his successor in September 2012 . After recovering from a long illness, Marcellin Theeuwes appeared again occasionally in public from 2015 onwards. a. at a colloquium in Taizé in July 2015.
