Marcus Meibom (Latinized also Marcus Meibomius ; * probably 1630 in Tönning ; † 1710 in Utrecht ) was a Danish classical philologist , music theorist , mathematician , antiquarian and librarian .

Marcus Meibom's most important work appeared in 1652 when he was only 22 years old. In his work Antiquae musicae auctores septem he put together the ancient Greek music theory writings of Aristoxenus , Euclid , Nicomachus of Gerasa , Alypios , Gaudentois , Bakcheios and Aristeides Quintilianus . In addition, he offered a self-made translation of the texts into Latin . He also published the Latin text of the seventh book of De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii by Martianus Capella there . For some of the writings it was the editio princeps . The work remained the authoritative work in the field until the publication of Musici scriptores Graeci by Karl von Jan in 1895 and some parts of it remained useful for research. His research into ancient music earned Meibom an invitation to the Swedish court of Queen Christina . There he tried to perform ancient Greek music, but failed, which led to harsh criticism, for example from Isaac Vossius . From 1653 to 1663 he was a librarian in Copenhagen .

In addition to research on music, Meibom also engaged in other ancient philological studies. He revised Ambrosius Civenius 'Latin translation of Diogenes Laertios ' History of Philosophy from the 15th Century; this work, first published in 1592, was then repeatedly included in later Diogenes editions. He translated Epictetus into Latin and commented on his work as well as the Tabula Cebetis , both of which were only published posthumously by Adriaan Reland . He devoted himself to the textual criticism of the Hebrew Old Testament , examined in particular the meter , and researched the mathematical proportions that are close to music theory.

Meibom was considered an eccentric and polemical personality about whom many anecdotes circulated.
