Marcus Samuelsson , b. Kassahun Tsegie (* 1970 in Addis Ababa ) is a Swedish - American chef , businessman and cookbook writer.

Samuelsson fell ill with tuberculosis at the age of 3, just like his sister, whereupon the two children were given up for adoption by their father . The mother had died of the disease shortly before. He was taken in by the Samuelsson family in Sävedalen, Sweden ( Partille municipality ). After school he began his career as a chef.

Today Samuelsson is part owner and head chef of the Aquavit restaurant in New York , where he lives in the Harlem district . In New York he is involved in three other restaurants ( Mercato 55 , Riingo and Scandinavian House ). He has also been part owner of the Clarion Hotel near Stockholm Central Station since 2008 , where he has set up a branch for his Aquavit restaurant.

Since 2005 Samuelsson has held lectures as a visiting professor at the University of Gastronomy at Umeå University . He has published several cookbooks and participates in programs from the television cooking studio in different countries (especially Sweden and USA). He is a citizen of Sweden and the USA.
