Choice Hotels International is a holding company in the hotel industry. The holding company owns the brands of several hotel chains . Choice Hotels International is one of the largest licensors in the accommodation industry worldwide .
Financial information
Until 2013, the company's headquarters were in Silver Spring in Montgomery County , Maryland . In April 2013, the seat was moved to Rockville, also in Montgomery County. The company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1996 under the symbol CHH.
The German headquarters are in Munich .
More than 5,360 hotels with over 400,000 rooms in more than 35 countries worldwide are among the company's franchisees. Choice Hotels Europe is represented by 1,152 hotels of the Comfort, Quality and Clarion brands. Choice Continental Europe in Munich looks after a total of 182 hotels in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic.
history
The company was founded in 1939 as Quality Courts United , to which seven motel owners in North Carolina and South Carolina had come together. The name was later shortened to Quality Inn . Hotels were accepted as franchise partners without the licensor requiring specific standards or compliance with guidelines . This is what distinguishes Quality Inn from the Holiday Inn hotel chain , which from the outset required compliance with numerous minimum standards and guidelines (for example, on room size or additional services) at every location in its chain. Quality Inn also approved existing hotels as franchisees.
With the start of the franchise model in 1973, the company renamed itself to Quality International . A few years later, only 38 hotels were owned by the company and around 300 hotels were franchised by third parties.
In 1982 Quality Inn created the new brands Comfort Inn and Quality Royale and assigned individual hotels to these new segments. The company grew strongly in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1987 Quality Royale was renamed Clarion and the first hotels with rooms of different quality levels (Comfort Suites, Quality Suites) were introduced.
In 1988 the company introduced the inexpensive Sleep Inn brand , which provided a uniform division of space and furnishings for new hotel buildings. The company Friendship Inn , Rodeway Inn and Econo Lodge were taken in the early 1990s, the company became Choice Hotels International, Inc. changed. The Friendship Inn properties were later assigned to the Rodeway Inn and Econo Lodge brands .
In the late 1990s, the apartment hotel brand Mainstay-Suites and the Choice Privileges bonus system were introduced for guests who are frequently guests of the various properties.
The Clarion Collection brand was created as an extension of the Clarion brand and consists of historically significant and service-oriented houses that offer lavish furnishings at affordable prices for customers.
In January 2005, the new brand Cambria Suites was introduced for new hotels with rooms of all comfort categories. At the end of 2005, twenty hotels were planned, and the opening of the houses in Boise , Idaho and Savannah (Georgia) is planned for early 2006. In September 2005 the suburban hotel chain Extended Stay with 67 hotels was taken over.

Built on the foundation of the Quality Inn brand for mid-range hotels , Choice Hotels is now the global licensor of hotels that are sold under the brands Ascend Hotel Collection, Cambria Suite, Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Comfort Inn by Journey's End (formerly Journey's End Motel), Quality Inn, Quality Suites, Sleep Inn, Clarion Hotels, Clarion Collection, MainStay Suites, Suburban Extended Stay Hotel, Econo Lodge and Rodeway Inn . The brands Friendship Inn and Quality Royale / Quality Courts have merged into Econo Lodge / Rodeway Inn or Clarion and the Quality Inn .
