In the same line-up, the team also won gold in the kneeling position and bronze in the standing position.

In 1967 Thompson won two gold medals at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg. In the kneeling position, she set a world record with 391 points. This made her the first woman across all sports to set a world record that was better than the men's world record.

At the World Championships in Phoenix in 1970, she entered after her marriage as Margaret Murdock. She won the individual standings in the 300 meter standing in front of her compatriots John Foster and John Writer . With Writer, Foster and Lones Wigger, she won the team championship in the standing position and in the three-position fight with the free rifle and silver in the kneeling position. In the women's competitions, she won the three-position battle in both the individual and the team classification.

Four years later at the World Championships in Thun, Murdock won the team classification of the small-bore three-position competition and small-bore standing shooting together with Lanny Bassham , John Writer and Lones Wigger. She won team silver in prone and kneeling shooting. In the women's competitions, she won bronze in the three-position battle, but won in the prone position in both the individual and team rankings. At the Pan American Games in Mexico City in 1975 , she won the three-position battle and two team competitions.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Margaret Murdock competed in the small-bore three-position battle. Lanny Bassham and Margaret Murdock both scored 1,162 points and were two points ahead of third-placed Werner Seibold from the Federal Republic of Germany. The decision between Bassham and Murdock was made because of Bassham's better result in the last series. At the award ceremony, Bassham and Murdock stood together on the top podium. Margaret Murdock was the first Olympic medalist in shooting, eight years after her Olympic medal in 1984 in Los Angeles women's competitions were included in the Olympic program.
