John Writer

John Henry Writer (born September 17, 1944 in Chicago ) is a retired marksman from the United States . He won an Olympic silver medal in 1968 and an Olympic gold medal in 1972.

Career

John Writer won the United States college championships as a student at West Virginia University in 1964, 1965, and 1966. In 1967 he won his first US title with the small bore rifle. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, the German Bernd Klingner won the small - bore three-position battle with 1157 points, followed by Writer with 1156 points, followed by Vitali Parchimowitsch from the Soviet Union with 1154 points, ahead of John Foster , the second representative from the United States.

At the 1970 World Championships in Phoenix Writer won bronze with the free rifle in the standing position and finished fifth in the three-position battle. The team from the United States won in both disciplines with Margaret Murdock , Lones Wigger , John Foster and John Writer in the team classification. With the small bore rifle Vitali Parchimowitsch won the three-position fight against John Writer, in standing shooting Writer received bronze. In the team classification, David Boyd , Foster, Wigger and Writer won the standing position. In competition with the standard rifle, Writer became individual world champion.

In 1971 Writer won three titles at the Pan American Games in Cali , including the single title in the small bore three-position battle. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich he only competed in this discipline and won with the world record of 1166 points and nine points ahead of his compatriot Lanny Bassham . In addition to the world record in the three-position fight, he also improved the world record in the standing position with 381 points.

His last major championships were the 1974 World Championships in Thun. There he won the small caliber three-position battle in front of Lones Wigger and Lanny Bassham. Together with Margaret Murdock, the three shooters also won the team championship, with the same line-up the team from the United States also won in the standing position. In the kneeling position, Writer won bronze in the individual standings and silver with the team. With the free rifle, Bassham, Foster, Wigger and Writer won the team classification of the three-position fight, as well as prone and standing shooting, plus a silver medal in the team classification for the kneeling position.
