Lanny Bassham

Lanny Robert Bassham (born January 2, 1947 in Comanche , Texas ) is a retired marksman from the United States . He won an Olympic silver medal in 1972 and an Olympic gold medal in 1976.

Career

Lanny Bassham was a captain in the US Army . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he competed in two disciplines. In the three-position battle with the free rifle, he reached 1144 points and finished seventh with eleven points behind gold and five points behind bronze. With the small-bore rifle he reached 1157 points in the three-position battle and won the silver medal nine points behind his compatriot John Writer .

At the 1974 World Championships in Thun, he won the three-position fight with the free rifle as well as prone and standing shooting. Together with John Writer, Lones Wigger and John Foster , he also won the team championship. Only in the kneeling position did the Polish team win over the Americans. In 1974, Bassham won the bronze medal behind Writer and Wigger in the three-position battle with the small bore rifle. In the team competition, the three shooters won together with Margaret Murdock . In the standing position Wigger won ahead of the Austrians Gerhard Krimbacher and Bassham, in the team classification the Americans won ahead of the team from the Soviet Union, which in turn won in front of the Americans in the kneeling position. Bassham also competed with the air rifle in Thun. Behind the Pole Eugeniusz Pedzisz he received the silver medal, in the team classification the team from the Federal Republic of Germany won ahead of the Americans.

In 1975 Bassham won three titles at the Pan American Games in Mexico City , and in the three-position battle with the small bore rifle, he received bronze in the individual ranking. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Lanny Bassham competed in the small-bore three-position fight. Lanny Bassham and Margaret Murdock both scored 1,162 points and were two points ahead of third-placed Werner Seibold from the Federal Republic of Germany. The decision between Bassham and Murdock was made because of Bassham's better result in the last series. At the award ceremony, Bassham and Murdock stood together on the top podium.

In 1978 at the World Championships in Seoul, Bassham won the small-bore three-position battle and won bronze in both standing and prone shooting. In all three disciplines, Bassham and Lones Wigger were part of the winning team.

After the end of his active career, Bassham worked for a short time as coach of the US Olympic team. He later founded his own company for mental management , which, in addition to business people, mainly looked after professional golfers.
