Margarita Percovich (born January 21, 1941 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician .

Education, private and other activities

After attending the Colegio Santo Domingo and secondary school education at the Colegio Sacré Cœur, Percovich's educational path eventually led to a specialization in politics from a gender perspective through a degree in philosophy and the management and strategic planning courses . She then attended the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidad de la República and eventually worked as chief secretary.

The divorced mother of the two daughters Ximena (* 1970) and Florencia (* 1973), who lives in Barrio Centro in Montevide, was one of the founders of the Frente Amplio in 1971 as part of the Grupos de Acción Unificadora (GAU) and has been a member of the Vertiente party wing there since 1989 Artiguista (Lista 77). During the period of dictatorship (1973–1985) she was an active member of the resistance. In the final phase of the civil-military government in 1984 she was a member of the Plenario de Mujeres del Uruguay (PLEMU), an independent women's organization that advocated the realization of human rights and operates as a non-governmental organization . In addition, from 1985 she was co-founder and member of the Concertación Nacional de Mujeres del Uruguay . In 1992 she was involved in the establishment of the Red de Mujeres Políticas del Uruguay . Political career

Her political career finally began when she was elected MP in 1990. However, she renounced her MP in favor of a position in the first departmental government of Montevideo, which was formed from 1990 to 1995 by the Frente Amplio. Here she was re-elected as Edil for the 1995-2000 term. In 1991 and 1996 she was President of the Junta Departamental in the Montevideo Department . In the 1999 elections she was elected to the Cámara de Representantes for the 2000-2005 term . There she helped found the Bancada Femenina de la Cámara de Diputados in 2000 , and in the same year she also held the office of Vice-President . In the election of October 31, 2004 , her mandate as representative of the Montevideo Department in the Uruguayan Chamber of Deputies was extended by the electorate for a second legislative period. She represented the Partido Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría . In addition, she took over a mandate in the Uruguayan Senate between March 2005 and March 2010 as a successor to Mariano Arana, who will henceforth be Minister for Housing, Regional Planning and the Environment . Percovich initiated a statute for the nationwide approval of registered partnerships in Uruguay, which has been allowed since 2008.
