The Margelchopf , the local mountain of the Grabser , is 2163 meters high and the culmination point of the northeastern side chain of the Alvier group in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .

Location and character of the mountain

Thanks to the easy accessibility and the beautiful view, especially of the Rhine Valley, it is next to the Alvier the most famous and most frequently visited summit of the group. Despite its low altitude, 2162.9 m above sea level according to the national map, the Margelchopf is an impressive, mighty mountain that towers high above the Werdenberg district in the Rhine Valley .

The extensive grass plateau on the summit is very rare in this size, it is surrounded on all sides by a belt of rock, which slopes heavily and steeply towards the north. It is only easily accessible from the south.

Ascent

  • The easiest route (T2 according to the SAC hiking scale ) leads from Buchser Malbun over the Sisitzgrat from the south to Margelchopf.
  • A demanding hiking route with climbing spots (T4) runs over the northwest ridge.
  • The very daring climb over the northeastern edge or - not recommended - over the eastern flank.
  • Winter: When there is little snow, many touring skiers take the opportunity to make a detour from the Sisitzgrat to the Margelchopf.
