Margherita Guarducci

Margherita Guarducci (born December 20, 1902 in Florence , † September 2, 1999 in Rome ) was an Italian epigraphist and archaeologist .

Life

Margherita Guarducci studied Classical Philology at the University of Bologna, where she received the Laurea from Vittorio Puntoni in 1924 . From 1924 to 1924 she studied further at the Scuola Archeologia Italiana and the University of Rome , from 1926 to 1927 at the Scuola Archologica Italiana in Athens . Here she was a student of the epigrapher Federico Halbherr and worked from 1928 for his Missione Archeologica Italiana on Crete , where she researched the ancient inscriptions. After Halbherr's death in 1930, she continued his great project of a corpus of the inscriptions of Crete Inscriptiones Creticae . In 1930 she received a freelance lectureship in Greek antiquity at the University of Rome, and from 1931 she had a teaching position in Greek epigraphy. From 1942 until her retirement in 1973 she held the chair of Greek epigraphy and antiquity at the University of Rome. From 1973 to 1978 she taught at the Scuola Nazionale di Archeologia di Roma, of which she was also director.

Honors

Maria Guarducci was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (1956), the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia (1969), the British Academy (1978) and the German Archaeological Institute . She received two honorary doctorates, from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and the University of Rennes .
