Life
Margie Hendrix founded the vocal trio The Cookies with Earl-Jean McCrea and Pat Lyles in 1954 in New York . After getting noticed at the Apollo Theater's Amateur Night, they got a contract with Atlantic Records and sang with renowned artists like LaVern Baker , Big Joe Turner and Ruth Brown . From her own recordings, "In Paradise" placed in the R&B Top Ten in 1956. The same cookies also recorded the girl group track "Baby, Baby (I still love you)" for the DIMENSION label under the pseudonym The Cinderellas . The lead vocals are from Margie Hendrix. The cookies became The Raelettes . They joined Ray Charles as background singers and can be heard on all the big hits and accompanied Ray Charles until the end of his career in changing line-ups (including Minnie Riperton, Mary Clayton, Mable John) and on his own TANGERINE label himself reached some smaller R&B chart listings.
Margie Hendrix died of a heroin overdose . She was the long-time lover of Ray Charles and mother of Charles Wayne Hendricks (* 1959), their son, who grew up with her sister after her death. Due to her private rifts with Charles, Hendrix left the group and tried unsuccessfully as a soloist.
