Margita Figuli (born October 2, 1909 in Vyšný Kubín , Austria-Hungary ; † March 27, 1995 in Bratislava , Slovakia ; pseudonyms: Morena , Oľga Morena ) was a Slovak writer, translator and children's literature author.

Life

Figuli was born in a farming family and was educated in Vyšný Kubín, then in Dolný Kubín and Banská Bystrica . However, her attempt to study painting in Prague failed. From 1928 to 1941 she worked at Tatra Banka as an English-speaking correspondent until she was dismissed for political reasons in 1941 and afterwards she only devoted herself to literature.

For her complete works she received the title zaslúžilá umelkyňa ("honored artist") in 1964 , then in 1974 the higher title národná umelkyňa ("national artist"). However, both titles were repealed by law after the Velvet Revolution in 1990.

Works

Figuli is a performer of Slovak naturalism and wrote short stories and novels. She published in the magazine Slovenská nedeľa since 1930 and later in the magazines Elán , Slovenské pohŽady , Živena and others. In the earlier works themes from the fringes of society are represented, later there are love, compassion and current social problems. In addition, she sometimes translated Czech authors ( Karel Čapek , Karel Jaromír Erben and others).

Some of her works have also been translated into German and other languages.
