history

The Assumption Church in 1909

In 1626, a wooden Assumption Church was built in Shabina Navolok (also called Borki) near Arkhangelsk. In 1640 the St. Simeon Stolpnik Chapel was built next to the church and in the second half of the 17th century the Holy Cross Chapel was also built next to the church.

In 1742 the old wooden church had to be torn down and the construction of the stone Church of the Assumption began, which lasted until 1744. In the same year the church was inaugurated. At first the church was built without a bell tower . However, soon after the church was inaugurated, from 1744 to 1752 a high, multi-tiered stone church tower was built on the west side of the church. The tower of the church was used by ships, especially Russian warships when entering the port of Arkhangelsk, as an orientation aid, because you could light a beacon in the church tower .

Over time, the church tower leaned slightly, so that it was popularly known as the "Leaning Tower of Arkhangelsk". In 1912, work was carried out under the supervision of the Imperial Archaeological Commission, under the direction of PP Pokryshkin, to correct the tilt of the church tower.

In 1930 the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and its striking church tower were demolished by the Communist Bolsheviks , the church grounds remained undeveloped. In 1989, shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union , the church was rebuilt. This was possible because Gorbachev's reforms made it possible to practice religion in a restricted manner in the weaker communism. The reconstruction of the Church of the Assumption lasted until the year 2000. In addition to the reconstruction of the church and the church tower , a wooden chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Siya, built near the church. Today the church is one of the largest churches in the city. Furthermore, a new Archangel Michael Cathedral will be built in Arkhangelsk, in the typical Russian-Byzantine style with five large gold-plated domes.
