The parish church of the Birth of Mary is the Roman Catholic village church of Höhenkirchen in Upper Bavaria .

history

The first church on Rosenheimer Strasse was a small wooden chapel. It was probably built in the 8th century. In its place, the newly built church in Romanesque style was built in 1020 (first mention). It was rebuilt several times and last renovated on a larger scale from 1983 to 1985 under Pastor Bernhard Koch. On this occasion, the church received back some furnishings that had been removed during the Second Vatican Council in 1965.

The simple saddle tower with a height of 27 meters was probably built at the end of the 15th century. In 1771 the church, especially in the choir, was redesigned in Baroque style. The west portal received its current neo-Gothic appearance in 1860 .

Furnishing

The high altar shows the crucifixion scene in the altarpiece ; Our Lady and John can be seen at the feet of the cross . It was painted by Wilhelm Asselborn from Munich in 1860 .

In the left side altar there is a late Gothic Madonna with the Christ child.

The baptismal font depicting John the Baptist is set up on the right side of the nave at the foot of the panel “Christ in the dungeon” (the actual side altar is stored in the Catholic parish center on Schulstrasse).

The holy Archangel Michael and the holy bishop Wolfgang von Regensburg can be seen on two half-sculptures in the chancel . They should not belong to the actual furnishings of the church.

A late Gothic cross hangs on the left side wall of the nave, which was probably made around 1530.

The epitaphs that are walled up in the choir wall and date back to the 16th century are particularly worth seeing . The bones of the deceased no longer rest in the chancel. They were transferred to a grave in the church cemetery. A separate tombstone has been erected for the donors of the Höhenkirchen benefit. The memorial stone for Adam Schöttl in the church tower is not open to the public . The hunter of Höhenkirchen played a not insignificant role in the so-called Sendlinger Murder Christmas .
