Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption in Steinhausen an der Rottum

The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary is the parish church of the Steinhausen an der Rottum community . It should not be confused with the Steinhausen pilgrimage church 25 kilometers to the west . The Church of the Assumption of Mary is located in the district of Biberach in Upper Swabia and belongs to the pastoral care unit 3a St. Benedikt Ochsenhausen . The church is the former Marian pilgrimage church of the imperial abbey of Ochsenhausen. It is surrounded by a wall, within which the cemetery and the memorial for the fallen and victims of the community's world wars are located. The neighboring rectory dates from 1710.

history

The community Steinhausen lies on a plateau on the left slope of the valley of the Untere Rottum . In 1128 a place was first named Obrostetten , later the place appeared under the name Oberstetten . In 1275 a church and a parish are mentioned in the monastery chronicle. The place belonging to it was deserted by its residents at this time. In the 14th century, a Pietà sculpture from 1350 was venerated in Steinhausen . In 1392 Steinhausen was acquired by the nearby Benedictine monastery of Ochsenhausen. In 1497 Abbot Simon Lengenberger had a new late Gothic building built. During the Thirty Years' War the church was repeatedly plundered, demolished under Abbot Balthasar Puolamer and a new early Baroque building was built in its place. Only the tower remained.

On September 19, 1673, the Auxiliary Bishop Georg Sigismund Müller (1655–1686) from Constance made the consecration. During the secularization of 1803, the place, like the Ochsenhausen monastery, first came to the Counts of Metternich-Winneburg, and in 1806 to the Kingdom of Württemberg .

Church building

Pieta

The church is 72 meters long, 16 meters wide and 11 meters high. The early baroque hall space is divided by pilasters in the middle. The church is a two-aisled hall church with four bays each . The tower has an octagonal bell storey with a cornice (1708) and an onion. Under the gable roof is a nave with six arched windows. This is preceded by a lower sloping east choir and a rectangular sacristy. The altar paintings are by the Memmingen painter Johann Heiss . Outside the church there is a memorial plaque to commemorate Pastor Raimund Mattes (1879–1914).

To the southwest within the walled church is a memorial for the fallen sons of the place in World War I and World War II . The First World War Memorial was built in 1919 and was made by sculptor Karl Deibele from Schwäbisch Gmünd. The Second World War Memorial was erected on September 4, 1952 by the sculptor Richard Schädler (March 19, 1912, † January 14, 1988).

Pieta

Over three hundred answers to prayer have been documented for the Pieta. Jesus' body with the clearly visible wounds rests in the arms of his mother Mary.
