Johann Heiss

Johann Heiss (born June 19, 1640 in Memmingen , † 1704 in Augsburg ) was a German baroque painter .

Life

After his training in Memmingen, which he completed with Hans Conrad Sichelbein and Johann Sichelbein , he was in the service of Duke Eberhard III of Württemberg in 1663 and 1664 in Stuttgart . From 1677 he lived and worked in Augsburg.

Works by Heiss can be seen in Germany in the Baroque Gallery in Ludwigsburg Castle , in the Memmingen City Museum, in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum (Braunschweig), in the Bavarian State Painting Collections, in the Germanic National Museum (Nuremberg), the German Baroque Gallery (Augsburg) and the State Gallery (Stuttgart). Abroad he is represented by works in the Louvre (Paris), the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna) and the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg).

In 1675, Joachim von Sandrart explicitly mentions Heiss in his "Teutschen Academie" as a history painter, whose pictures "very well contain lovers and art experts" .

His work "Manus Dei", which is recorded in several archives, is considered lost. It became known through a forgery by the painter Wolfgang Beltracchi , which was exhibited in the Szépművészeti Múzeum , among other places .
