Maria: The Virgin Witch ( Japanese 純潔 の マ リ ア , Junketsu no Maria, German "the virgin Mary"), also subtitled in French with Sorcière de gré, pucelle de force ("witch by pleasure, virgin by compulsion"), is a manga by Masayuki Ishikawa , which was also adapted as an anime in 2015 .

action

The mighty witch Maria lives in France during the Hundred Years' War , who loathes war beyond measure and therefore regularly uses her magic to chase the English and French troops off the battlefield or, with the help of her succubus Artemis and Incubus Priapus, to influence the commanders from battles. In doing so she incurs the displeasure of heaven, since wars and all their consequences are part of the natural order and Mary interferes in human affairs. Finally, the Archangel Michael decides to intervene directly and take away the magic from Mary, but can be persuaded by the girl Anne from the neighboring village, whom Mary often helps, and by Joseph, who is in love with her, to soften Mary's punishment, so that from now on she is forbidden will use magic in public. In addition, she would lose her magic if she lost her virginity. Since Michael cannot constantly monitor her, he puts the angel Ezekiel at her side, who is supposed to monitor compliance. But Maria’s activities are too colorful for the church and tries to harness them for their own purposes.

characters

Maria ( マ リ ア )
Speaker: Hisako Kanemoto
Maria is a young but powerful witch who hates war. She has been helping people with all kinds of emergencies since she was a child, even if she was often chased away by them with stones, she does not hold this against people. She lives in the forest near a village whose residents have accepted her. She is characterized by her stubbornness and a certain naivety. Like her namesake , she is still a virgin, for which she is raised in particular by her succubus Artemis. Instead of a broom, she uses a pitchfork to fly.
Artemis ( ア ル テ ミ ス , Arutemisu )
Speaker: Yōko Hikasa
Artemis is a white owl who was transformed into a succubus by Maria. As such, she is very attractive and only wears white belts over her body as clothing. Your task is to visit the individual military leaders at night and to convince them or at least to exhaust them so that they can cease further fighting. She often has fun with Maria about her inexperience in sexual matters. It is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt Artemis .
Priapos ( プ リ ア ポ ス , Puriaposu )
Speaker: Mikako Komatsu
After Artemis asked Maria to create an incubus, since homosexuality was currently in vogue with individual military leaders, she created Priapus from another white owl, named after the Greek god of fertility of the same name . Since Maria does not know what a man looks like downstairs, in contrast to his lush mythological role model there are only white clouds of mist at this point, which this Maria often holds up to because he cannot do his nightly work properly, but is otherwise very good for her loyal.
Ezekiel ( エ ゼ キ エ ル , Ezekieru )
Speaker: Kana Hanazawa
Ezekiel was sent by the Archangel Michael to ensure that Mary followed his instructions. She has the figure of a girl, but also disguises herself as a dove. Ezekiel is a bit naive, which Maria uses to continue using her magic by, for example, conjuring up behind Ezekiel's back and then making her believe that the monster that the troops on the battlefield must have been conjured up by someone else, or simply her eyes holds up. In the course of time she slowly begins to sympathize with Maria's views until she finally turns against Michael and as a "punishment" will eventually become Maria and Joseph's future child.
Joseph ( ジ ョ セ フ , Josefu )
Speaker: Kenshō Ono
Joseph is the messenger of Count Guillaume, the liege lord of the area in which Mary works, who exchanges messages between him and the troops. This also includes requests to Maria so that he visits her often. He is in love with Maria, especially since she protected him from death on the battlefield and stands against the Archangel Michael to save her, which ultimately causes Heaven to lower Mary's punishment.
Anne ( ア ン , An )
Speaker: Ai Kakuma
Anne is a little girl from the village near Maria's forest. She often visits Maria to get medicine for her grandmother and befriends Maria even though she is a devout.
Viv ( ビ ブ , Bibu )
Speaker: Mamiko Noto
Viv is a witch from England who works for anyone who offers her enough money. On the one hand, she cannot understand Mary's idealism, on the other hand, she also takes care of Mary with the commitment of her life if she is in danger because of her idealism. She also uses a succubus, but also personally takes over its tasks if she likes the goal.
Michael ( ミ カ エ ル , Mikaeru )
Speaker: Kikuko Inoue
Michael is the archangel who represents heaven which does not like that Mary interferes in the natural order of the human world, which is why he imposes restrictions on her observance of which Ezekiel is turned off.

Anime only

Garfa ( ガ ル フ ァ , Garufa )
Speaker: Yūki Ono
Garfa is a mercenary in the service of the French army. He is friends with Joseph, but does not speak well of Mary, as her interference prevents him from going about his business. In the fight he kills his mercenary leader Yvain and thus becomes the leader himself. He later loses his arm during a battle and is given an iron hand . Garfa is assigned by Bernard to eliminate Maria.
Lolotte ( ロ ロ ッ ト , Rorotto )
Speaker: Sachiko Kojima
Lolotte is a prostitute in the mercenary squad, but also takes on other duties on the battlefield. She is often around Garfa, so she is the only one who knows about Yvain's murder.
Bernard ( ベ ル ナ ー ル , Berunāru )
Speaker: Takahiro Sakurai
Bernard is the nephew of Count Guillaume and head of a monastery. The heretical Mary is a thorn in his side, whom he first wants to convince to repent of her sins and to renounce magic, and when this fails, Mary unconsciously devises a plan to use the French army to gain advantage or later initiates a witch trial.
On the other hand, he also wants to understand Maria's motives, which ultimately leads to his developing a new theological position in which he anticipates the Enlightenment image of God in which angels and demons have no place. When Michael faces him, however, he gets into a crisis of meaning in the course of which he attacks Michael and is transformed by him into a pillar of salt.
Cernunnos ( ケ ル ヌ ン ノ ス , Kerununnosu )
Speaker: Takaya Hashi
Cernunnos is an old Celtic god whose power was pushed back by Christianity, and who often visits Mary as a shadowy figure to convince her to join him.
