Maria Barbal i Farré (born September 17, 1949 in Tremp ) is a Catalan writer. She is considered one of the most important and successful contemporary authors of the Catalan language .

Life

Barbal spent her childhood in the mountainous region of the Spanish Pyrenees . In 1964 she came to Barcelona to attend the local university Spanish Philology study. There she then worked as a teacher.

Her first books appeared in the 1980s, most of which were located in the archaic, rural context of her homeland. Her book Wie ein Stein im Geröll (1985, original title Pedra de tartera ) was published in fifty editions in her home country and has since been translated into several languages.

For her work, Barbal was awarded the Premio de la Crítica Literaria de Narrativa Catalana, the Premi Nacional de Literatura Catalana and the Serra d'Or Prize . Her novel Inneres Land (2005, original title País íntim ) won her the prestigious Prudenci Bertrana Prize .
