Portrait of Maria Eleonore von Dernbach

Maria Eleonore von Dernbach , née von Hatzfeld (later Maria Eleonore von Schönborn ; * February 16, 1680 in Unterschüpf , today Boxberg ; † April 26, 1718 in Wiesentheid ) was the ruling countess of the Wiesentheid reign from 1697 to 1704 .

Life

Maria Eleonore von Hatzfeld was born on February 16, 1680 at Schloss Unterschüpf , in what is now Tauberfranken . Two days later, on February 18, she was also baptized here. Her father was Count Heinrich von Hatzfeld , her mother Catharina Elisabetha von Schönborn. Maria Eleonore was the second-born daughter. In total, she had nine siblings, but not all of them reached adulthood.

In March 1695 she was married to the old Count von Dernbach, Johann Otto . He was the lord of the county of Wiesentheid, which had just been raised to the status of the Reich . Just a year later, Johann Otto was seriously ill. Therefore, on December 31, 1696, he had his wife Maria Eleonore proclaimed ruling countess. In his will, published on January 7, 1697, the count reinforced this intention. When he died in May 1697, Maria Eleonore wanted to take over the rule.

The Würzburg prince-bishop Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg did not appreciate the rule of a woman in his immediate vicinity and occupied the county that same year. The Countess's relative, the Bamberg Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn , appealed to Emperor Leopold I to reverse this illegal occupation. Only after the death of Gottfried von Guttenberg was a compromise reached on February 12, 1701 and Maria Eleonore could take over the rule.

In the same year the countess married again: on November 14, 1701 she married Rudolf Franz Erwein von Schönborn . It is unclear whether the newlyweds took over the government in the small county after the wedding, but older research suggests. Only the official transfer of ownership on July 26, 1704 ended the reign of Maria Eleonore. She died on 26 April 1718 of their former residence in Wiesentheid .

Marriages and offspring

On April 18, 1695, Maria Eleonore von Hatzfeld married the former Würzburg canon Johann Otto von Dernbach , whose name she also adopted. A daughter came from this connection, but she died during her first year of life.
