Unterschüpf Castle

The Unterschüpf Castle , also known as the Unterschüpf moated castle, is a former moated castle in Unterschüpf , a district of Boxberg in Baden-Württemberg .

history

The Unterschüpf Castle was built in 1610 in place of a previous building from 1561 as the seat of the Knights of Rosenberg in the Renaissance style. After the Rosenbergs died out in 1640, it fell to the Counts of Hatzfeld as the Electorate of Mainz , who kept it until they died out in 1794. In 1808 it became the property of the Princes of Leiningen . In 1830 the moats were filled in. In 1874 the community of Unterschüpf acquired the castle, with which it or its legal successor, the city of Boxberg, has remained until today. Comprehensive renovation measures were carried out in the 1970s. The building has been used as a school for the speech-impaired since the 1980s .

investment

The castle is an almost square two-storey building with three round corner towers and a small inner courtyard with a stair tower . Several eyeglass loops give it a defensive character, although it was never a defense structure. There is a rustik portal on the northeast side. Except for the roofs and a few enlarged windows, the exterior of the castle has remained almost unchanged.

use

The Unterschüpf Castle was once the seat of Franconian nobles. It also served as a worship room. Later the castle was used as a town hall and as a local prison.

The building has been used as a school for the speech-impaired since the 1980s .
