history

Gissigheim Castle was built in the 16th century and expanded between 1726 and 1727 by the Tyrolean master builder Christian Schneller. In 1736 a lower transverse wing was added. In 1806 the Bettendorf family moved to Würzburg.

Franz Ludwig von Bettendorf, Grand Ducal Rittmeister of Baden, sold the castle and its possessions to the Baden state on April 7, 1841. In 1844 the Gissigheim community bought the castle. In 1846 the town hall of the then still independent village was set up on the first floor of the castle, below the castle was used as a primary and elementary school. The coat of arms of the barons of Bettendorf, a silver ring on a red background, still adorns the two-story building with the portal in the middle. This coat of arms is used today as the Gissigheim local coat of arms.

In the 1970s, the castle cellar was expanded as an event room. Pastor Franz Gehrig set up a local history museum in the castle warehouse in the 1980s. In 2010 the tradition of the school in the castle ended with the merging of the Gissigheim elementary school with the elementary and secondary school in Königheim.
