Lower Gamburg Castle
The Lower Gamburg Castle is a former Freihof on the edge of the Taubertal in Gamburg near Werbach in Baden-Württemberg . The term Lower Castle was created to differentiate it from Gamburg Castle , also called Upper Castle .
history
The Lower Gamburg Castle was built in 1522 by Johann Kuchenmeister. In 1546 the local Kurmainz bailiff, court master and councilor Eberhard Rüdt von Collenberg acquired all Mainz possessions in Gamburg, including the Upper Castle (also Castle Gamburg ) and the Lower Castle . However, since he had no male offspring, the inheritance was divided among his three sons-in-law after his death in 1568 by drawing lots. Eberhard Brendel von Homburg got the Lower Palace, a former Freihof. Dietrich von Hattstein received Gamburg Castle. In 1570 Dietrich von Hattstein and his brother-in-law had to swap the castle for the lower castle due to a lack of money for a compensation payment. The owner of the Lower Castle was therefore Dietrich von Hattstein from 1570. After Dietrich von Hattstein died without a male heir, the Lower Castle passed to his son-in-law Franz von Kronenberg at the beginning of the 17th century. Through marriage and inheritance, it came into the possession of Johann Schweickhard von und zu Sickingen around 1650. In 1686 his son Franz von und zu Sickingen sold it to the Juliusspital Würzburg . In 1877, Privy Councilor Carl Gerhard from Berlin acquired the Lower Palace from the Juliusspital Würzburg Foundation. The castle then remained in the family ownership of his descendants.
