Grünsfeld Castle
The Grunfeld Castle , also castle Grunfeld is a partially preserved castle in green field in the Main-Tauber-Kreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg .
history
The former Grünsfeld castle was built around 1215 by the Counts of Rieneck with towers and a drawbridge, the Nikolauskapelle as well as a storage building and a cellar for grain and wine. The castle has been rebuilt several times over the years. Grünsfeld Castle was mentioned in a document in 1280. In the years 1482/87 extensions and modifications were carried out. In 1525 the castle was largely destroyed in the German Peasants' War.
In the Thirty Years War from 1618 to 1648, the owners changed frequently. Sometimes it was the Swedes, sometimes the imperial ones, who quartered themselves, which led to great financial burdens. During the war, the castle was the headquarters of Count Tilly , the chief military leader of the Catholic League and the imperial troops . Towards the end of the war, from 1642 onwards, the residents of the surrounding official villages sought protection of the city walls. The castle, which was first renovated several times in the 16th and 17th centuries, partially fell into disrepair after the Thirty Years' War and was demolished except for the tithe barn.
Only two gate towers, fortifications and an elongated east wing with humpback blocks and a Gothic stepped gable, which was used as a tenth building, are preserved today . On the 1st floor of the former tithe building there is a permanent exhibition on the history of the city of Grünsfeld from prehistory and early history to modern times.
