Maria Franke (born November 13, 1991 in Zeitz ) is a former German enduro and motocross athlete . In 2017 she became world champion at the Enduro World Championship .

Athletic career

Franke made her first driving attempts at the age of four.

In the 2007 season she started for the first time in the Motocross World Championship and reached 3rd place, in the following season she repeated this success. In 2008 she reached 1st place in the national DMV MX Ladies Cup, came 4th at the 2009 World Championships and 5th in 2010. She competed in her races on a Kawasaki 250 cc.

Towards the end of the 2010 season, she suffered a fracture of the third lumbar vertebra in training . After an operation and subsequent rehabilitation , she took part in competitions again in 2011, gradually switching from motocross to enduro . In the 2011 season she was champion in the DMV MX Ladies Cup for the second time.

With the 2012 season the DMV MX Ladies Cup was no longer held. Franke therefore started in the newly created German Cross Country Championship (GCC) and there in the Pro class. However, during the season she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and was sidelined for seven months. As a result, she only finished 27th in the overall ranking. In the 2013 season she started again in the GCC, this time in the Expert class. She reached the 47th place. At the same time, she started in the German Enduro Women’s Cup and reached 1st place there.

In 2014 she took part in the women's class at the SuperEnduro World Cup and finished 6th at the end of the season. At the same time, she started this season as the only female rider in the German Enduro Junior Cup and finished 9th in the overall standings, and in the championship standings (across all classes) she was 50th with 103 starts. Here she was also the only woman in the field.

In the German Enduro Women’s Cup she finished 3rd at the end of the 2015 season. - Of six races she only took part in the first three, but she was able to win all of them. Apart from motocross and enduro, she took part in the German Mountain Bike Championship in the downhill class, where she finished 2nd.

At the end of 2015 Franke switched to the " Team Sturm Zschopau ", for which she started on KTM from the 2016 season .

In 2016, she was the only female driver in class E1 of the DMSB Enduro Championship and came in 6th place. In the championship ranking, he was 21st out of 79 starts. Here she was also the only woman in the field. At the same time, she started in the women's enduro world championship in 2016 , where she immediately achieved second place. In October 2016 she started for the first time with the women's national team at the 91st International Six-Day Race in Spain . With the team she reached the 3rd place. In the women's individual competition, she was the first German female driver to take first place.

In the following year she started again in class E1 of the DMSB Enduro Championship and reached 6th place as in the previous year. In the championship ranking, she landed in 19th place with 98 starts and was again the only woman in the field. In September 2017 she took part in the Motocross of European Nations in Gdansk with Anne Borchers , with whom she formed the women's team Germany , and achieved 3rd place there.

As in the previous year, she started at the same time in the Enduro World Championship in 2017 and won the world championship title there on the second day of the final run in Zschopau as the first and so far only German rider .

Franke became a mother in August 2018 and therefore took a break from competitive sports.

In the 2019 season Franke started in the DMSB Enduro Women’s Cup and already achieved the championship title there after the penultimate run. This season she managed to win on all days of the race in each of the five runs and thus achieved the maximum possible rating points in this class. At the 94th International Six-Day Race , which was held in Portugal in November 2019 , she and the national team took second place in the competition for the Women's World Trophy. In addition, she repeated her success from 2016 and became the fastest driver in the women's individual competition.

At the beginning of September 2020, Maria Franke announced the end of her career.
