Mark Eden (actor)
Mark Eden (born February 14, 1928 in London as Douglas John Malin , † January 1, 2021 ) was a British actor .
life and career
In the 1950s, Malin gained his first stage experience as an amateur actor and later as a theater assistant, while at the same time struggling with tuberculosis, before he finally became a professional actor at the age of almost 30 under the stage name Mark Eden . Between 1958 and 2013, Mark Eden worked on a total of over 100 different film and television productions. In the 1960s he had a number of notable cinema roles, such as alongside Richard Attenborough and Kim Stanley in the thriller On a Gloomy Afternoon , as a British officer in the war film Storm on the Iron Coast and as a counterpart to Christopher Lee's villains inCount Dracula's witch . In the film epic Doctor Zhivago by David Lean , he has to film the beginning of a brief appearance as an ambitious Soviet engineer.
While Eden mostly had to limit himself to supporting roles in movies, he also played leading roles in series such as Catch Hand or The Newcomers . In 1964, he played the role of Marco Polo in the iconic series Doctor Who in seven episodes that have largely been lost to this day . He was known to British television audiences for his participation in the series Coronation Street , in which he was the main antagonist of the show between 1986 and 1989 as the villain Alan Bradley . He last appeared in a supporting role in 2013 in the television film An Adventure in Space and Time , which described the beginnings of Doctor Who , on which he had also worked almost half a century earlier.
Mark Eden was married three times, most recently from 1993 to the actress Sue Nicholls (* 1943), also known from Coronation Street . He had three children. Eden died on New Years Day 2021 at the age of 92, after last suffering from Alzheimer's.
