Maria Gontowicz-Szałas , until 1987 Maria Gontowicz , (born February 23, 1965 in Gorzów Wielkopolski ) is a former Polish judoka . She was second in the 1986 world championship in lightweight .

Athletic career

The 1.60 m tall Maria Gontowicz competed in the lightweight, the weight class up to 56 kilograms. In this weight class she was Polish champion in 1982, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 1992.

She won her first international medal at the 1985 European Championships in Landskrona. After a defeat in the quarter-finals against the British Diane Bell , Gontowicz reached the battle for bronze with two wins in the hope round, where she defeated the German Regina Philips . The following year she won bronze again at the 1986 European Championships in London. After a semi-final defeat against French Béatrice Rodriguez , the Polish defeated Regina Philips again in the battle for bronze. Seven months later, at the 1986 World Championships in Maastricht, she defeated Béatrice Rodriguez in the quarter-finals and the Italian Domenica Soraci in the semi-finals . She lost the final against the British Ann Hughes . In 1987 she won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Paris.

After a break of over a year, she returned as Maria Gontowicz-Szałas and at the end of 1988 won silver at the world championships for students behind Jenny Gal from the Netherlands . In 1989 she lost to the French Catherine Arnaud in the final of the European Championships . She finished seventh at the 1991 World Championships in Barcelona, ​​just like a year later at the 1992 Olympic Games .
