Maria Heim is a former estate of the Neustift canon monastery near Brixen . Today the facility, which was mainly built at the beginning of the 17th century, is used as a community center for the German-speaking population of the mostly Italian district of Europa-Neustift . The name of the district indirectly refers to Maria Heim, as the Neustifterweg, which gives it its name, on which Maria Heim is also located, takes its name from the local possessions of Neustift.

history

The Neustift provost Markus Hauser von Weißenstein acquired around 8 hectares of land in what would later become the municipality of Gries in order to cultivate wine there. The Lagrein of the Neustift monastery winery in Bolzano is still grown in the vines around Maria Heim today . Due to the expansion of the city of Bozen, which began in the interwar period , little is left of the original winery. Hauser also had the courtyard built and surrounded by a wall.

Admittedly, the ownership of the canons' monastery in the Bolzano area is much older and included estates in Rentsch , the Bolzano village and Gries. The "herrn von der Newenstifft" are mentioned several times in Bolzano documents as early as the 13th century and in the following centuries as landowners in Gries-Quirein. The construction of Maria Heim represented the end point of this development, as the residence-like facility now served the permanent residence of the goods provost - a donor economic officer.

Community center

The idea for the community center came up in 1975. Activities began in 1977 in some of the basement rooms. In 1981 the operator cooperative, founded in 1980, was able to acquire the entire farm with the help of a significant state contribution.

Today the community center is used by various associations, the German-speaking parish of the nearby Regina Pacis Church ( Queen of Peace ), the Bolzano adult education center, two choirs and a band. Until the reform of the Bolzano music school in the 2000s, courses from the Gries music school were also held there.
