Europa-Neustift ( Italian Europa-Novacella ) is one of the five districts of the South Tyrolean capital Bozen ( Italy ). It is located in the center of today's urban area and with 0.84 km² or 19,119 inhabitants per km² is the smallest and most densely populated district in the city.

geography

Europa-Neustift, located in the Bolzano basin in the Adige Valley , is positioned between Don Bosco, which is further west, and the Gries-Quirein district to the north and east . The natural border in the south is the Eisack river . The distance to the old town, which can be reached via the Drusus Bridge, is about two kilometers.

Outline of the district

  • Europaviertel (area of Palermostraße and parts of Milanostraße and Europaallee)
  • Neustift (area of Dalmatienstrasse, bounded by Palermostrasse, Drususallee and Romstrasse)

history

Until the incorporation of Gries, the area of what is now the Europa-Neustift district was a rural area around Maria Heim , and traffic was via Maria-Heim-Weg. From the late 1920s onwards, various new streets and an urban workers' settlement called "Rione Littorio" ( Liktorenviertel ) were built (from 1935). The center formed the "piazza Littoria" (Liktorenplatz). In today's Don Bosco district , workers' houses in the so-called semi-rural style (“semirurali”) were built from 1938.

After the war, Piazza Littoria was named Matteottiplatz after the anti-fascist Giacomo Matteotti .

The district's main church, the Regina Pacis ( Queen of Peace ) Church , was consecrated in 1960.
