The Bolzano City Archives ( Italian Archivio Storico della Città di Bolzano ) is the central storage and documentation center of the South Tyrolean capital of Bolzano . It is located in the arcades of the old town hall and has an extensive archival collection, some of which goes back to the Middle Ages. The documents, plans and documentation reflect the historical development of Bolzano and the country. Most of the holdings are in German , while early documents are in Latin , and documents from the 1920s onwards are also in Italian .

history

As early as the late 15th century, measures for the storage, order and use of municipal documents are documented. During the term of office of the mayor Franz von Gumer , the city council decided on January 4, 1776 the central collection of all archive materials in the newly built town hall in the arcades (today's old town hall ). In the early 20th century, the archive in the Bolzano City Museum was fundamentally reorganized and set up (including the introduction of a uniform inventory ) , which served as a repository for the older holdings, while newer files remained in the new town hall . In 2002 it was possible to merge all of the holdings in the old town hall.

Stocks

The holdings of the city archive, which mainly document municipal administrative activities, go back to the 13th and 14th centuries and include documents , files and manuscripts ( official books ), whereby this archival tectonics of the old holdings, which is still valid today , was created by Karl Klaar around 1910/11. Not only archives of the city of Bolzano are stored, but also of the former communities of Gries and Zwölfmalgrei , the rural community of Leifers , as well as archives of other local bodies and associations. Among the most valuable manuscripts include the Bolzano city book from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries as well as the scale in the 16th Bolzano Bürgerbuch .

The extensive archive of the former Bolzano Holy Spirit Hospital is of particular importance . The oldest tradition in the city archives is a fragment from the 12th century that contains an excerpt from a biblical commentary by Beda Venerabilis .

Services

The city archive is open to the public and can be used free of charge. A reference library is also available. Historical council minutes are digitized and put online on the website of the city archives via the project “ BOhisto : Bozen-Bolzano's History Online”. In the foyer facing the arbors, an exhibit of the month is also presented, which aims to make the curious and unknown from the holdings known to a wider audience.
