Franz von Gumer (* 1731 in Bolzano ; † July 25, 1794 in Vienna ) was mayor of Bolzano and founder of a Bolzano Masonic lodge .

Life

The Gumer von Engelsburg family was one of the economically and politically most important families of the Bozen trading aristocracy. When Emperor Franz , the husband of Maria Theresa , in July 1765 on the occasion of the marriage of his son Leopold traveled via Bolzano to Innsbruck, he is the father of Francis, merchants and bankers (1732-1793), Johann Gumer for a loan of 200,000 guilders have asked whereupon he is said to have only asked in which currency the emperor wanted to redeem this amount in cash.

Franz von Gumer married Katharina Faber von Lanegg in 1757. He also distinguished himself as a charitable donor.

From 1771 to 1776 von Gumer was mayor of Bozen. At the Tyrolean parliament of 1790 he was the spokesman for the mercantile magistrate and the so-called "Bolzano Party".

In 1780 Franz von Gumer founded a secret Masonic lodge in Bozen. In Vienna and Innsbruck he had previously become a member of the St. John's lodges "To the Crowned Hope in the Orient of Vienna" and "To the Three Mountains". The Bozen Freemasons met in Ignaz von Atzwanger's house. The lodge no longer worked after 1785, however, as the rejection of Freemasonry in broader sections of the population took on dubious forms and the Masonic patent Joseph II of December 11, 1785 also came into effect in Bolzano.

The Masonic room in his summer cottage in Maria Himmelfahrt (today the Toggenburg family ) contains interesting ceiling and wall paintings with Masonic symbols.

In Bozen today there is an Italian and a German Masonic lodge, the latter bears the name "Franz von Gumer".
