history

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Geismar , which has been predominantly Protestant since the Reformation, increased considerably as a result of the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . Refugees from the nearby Catholic Obereichsfeld as well as the entry of the Bundeswehr into the Zieten barracks from 1957 increased the number of Catholics in Geismar and the surrounding area.

Initially these Catholics were looked after by clergymen from St. Michael in Göttingen. Occasionally, catholic services took place in the Protestant village church of St. Martin in Geismar.

At the end of the 1950s, efforts to establish a Catholic church began in the then still independent community of Geismar. The foundation stone of the church was laid on October 30, 1960, and its consecration followed on October 29, 1961 by Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich Pachowiak . On July 1, 1963 the parish (Kuratiegemeinde) Geismar was established, its first pastor was Karl-Heinz Schulz. On July 4, 1964, the village of Geismar was incorporated into the city of Göttingen, and on November 1, 1973 the parish of Maria Königin des Friedens was raised to a parish. In 1973 the sanctuary was also redesigned according to the liturgy specifications of the Second Vatican Council .

Since at least 1986 the parish of Maria Königin des Friedens has also included Hl. Kreuz in Rittmarshausen . From 1997 the two parishes Maria Queen of Peace in Göttingen and St. Norbert in Friedland formed a pastoral care unit . On November 1, 2006, the St. Norbert Church was affiliated to the parish of Maria Königin des Friedens , the parish of St. Norbert was dissolved in this context. This increased the number of parishioners to around 5,000.

Architecture and equipment

The church was built according to plans by the architect Josef Bieling from Kassel , with a free-standing bell tower. Franz Pauli designed the altarpiece and the windows. The organ was built in 1969 by the Krell brothers from Duderstadt . The parish also includes the Maria Frieden day-care center at Tannenweg 22, around 300 meters from the church.
