Maria Kouvatsou ( Greek Μαρία Κουβάτσου , born November 2, 1979 in Athens ) is a Greek chess player .
When she was five years old, her parents moved to Chania , Crete . Since she was able to play chess, she has been a member of the AO Kydon Chania ( Kydon Sports Club ), with which she also played at the European Club Cup 2001 and the European Club Cup women in 2003, both in Crete, and with which she became Greek team champion in 2002 .

In 1991 she got a bronze medal in her age group at the Greek championship. In 1999 she became the Greek U20 champion. In the same year in September she became U20 junior world champion in Yerevan , Armenia , making her the only Greek woman to win a world chess championship. In this tournament she was in the lead from the start. Although she lost her last two games, she had gained so much advantage by then that with the Czech Jana Jacková , the Romanian Szidónia Vajda and the American Irina Krush, three players only achieved the same number of points, but Kouvatsou due to the best rating Tournament winner was.
In 2000 Kouvatsou became Greek women's champion . In April 2001 she reached a 1-1 match against Anatoli Karpow in Rethymno , Crete. She even won the first game against him. Maria Kouvatsou took part with the Greek women's team in the 1998 , 2000 , 2002 and 2016 Chess Olympiads and the European Team Championships in 2001 and 2015 as reserve player.
