Maria Markina ( Russian Мария Маркина , * 1981 in Moscow ) is a Russian opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ). After stints in Moscow and Houston, she was engaged at the Hamburg State Opera from 2009 to 2015 and has since worked at the Mannheim National Theater.

Life

Maria Markina studied singing at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts in Moscow, where she graduated in 2004. Until 2006 she worked as a soloist at the Moscow New Opera .

In 2006 she won first prize at the Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers in Houston , and was then a member of the Houston Grand Opera Studio until 2009 . In the 2009/2010 season Markina moved to Hamburg , where she was initially promoted as a member of the International Opera Studio. From 2010 she was then permanently engaged as a soloist at the Hamburg State Opera until she moved to the Nationaltheater Mannheim in summer 2015. Markina is married to the Russian sculptor Alexej Markin and has one child.

Her repertoire includes the roles of Bradamante in Alcina and Diana in Iphigénie en Tauride , the title role in La Cenerentola , Lola in Cavalleria rusticana , Flora Bervoix in La traviata and Zaida in Il turco in Italia . There is also the Russian repertoire, including Olga in Eugene Onegin , Polina in Queen of Spades and Dunjascha in the Tsar's Bride , and the trouser roles common for a mezzo-soprano, including Cherubino in Figaro's Wedding , Hansel in Hansel and Gretel and Siebel in Gounod's Faust .
