Maria Saalen
The pilgrimage church Maria Saalen ( Our Lady of Loreto ) is located in the Saalen fraction of the municipality of St. Lorenzen in South Tyrol . It belongs to the diocese of Bozen-Brixen and is a listed building .
history
In 1653 the church was built as a hermitage at the entrance to the Val Badia above Montal. The Black Madonna , which stands at the altar today, is said to have been found by a farmer in the nearby field. This is how Maria Saalen became a popular pilgrimage church and today, thanks to its beautiful location, it is also a destination for excursions.
Building description
The elongated building, erected in 1665, has a straight end of the choir and a small choir tower crowned by an onion dome over an octagon . In addition to the stone-framed square door, there is access to the gallery via a staircase . On the long side is a fresco with the legend of Loreto , in the facade gable the Madonna of Mercy and Saints Joseph and New Year's Eve . The bell in the tower was cast in 1656.
The barrel vault inside is decorated with stucco and paintings; Josef Renzler painted the round fresco Maria and Josef visit Anna and Joachim . At the altar stands the grace figure of the black Madonna between the figures of Joachim and Anna . Above this, in the altarpiece, God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit can be seen between a group of preaching . The statues of Joseph and Silvester stand on the sacrificial portals flanking the altar . A crucifix on the nave wall dates from around 1600. Numerous votive pictures from the 18th and 19th centuries attest to the answers to prayer.
