The Maria Sibylla Merian Center for Advanced Latin American Studies (CALAS) is a German-Latin American center for advanced studies in Latin America , with its main location in Guadalajara and regional locations in Buenos Aires , Quito and San José de Costa Rica. As an international reference point for social sciences and humanities research from and about Latin America, CALAS promotes interdisciplinary and interregional dialogue.

Participating institutions

Under the leadership of the Center for InterAmerican Studies (CIAS) at Bielefeld University and with financial support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Germany and the National Council for Science and Technology ( CONACyT ) in Mexico , the University of Guadalajara , the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CELA) of the University of Kassel , the FLACSO-Ecuador, the Leibniz University of Hanover , the University of Costa Rica, the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and the UNSAM in Buenos Aires are involved in CALAS. CALAS also cooperates with the University of Havana in Cuba and the Instituto de Estudos Avançados Transdisciplinares (IEAT) of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Brazil through a visiting professorship program .

Britta Pradberg (2020) describes this international network structure in her history of the Institutes for Advanced Studies as a new fourth generation of such research centers in the context of international cooperation, which differs from previously founded IAS in that, although they have always carried out international research, they are more firmly anchored nationally were or are.

research

In terms of content, CALAS focuses on the topic of how social actors perceive multiple crises and react to them - with new approaches, among other things. The CALAS provides an institutional framework within which, in the long term, together with scientists from Latin America - as well as in exchange with the Merian Centers in other regions of the world (ICAS: MP, MeciLA, MIASA, MECAM) - dealing with crises in relation to violence and conflict resolution , social inequality, environmental changes and regional identities on the continent can be researched from a humanities and social science perspective. In addition to the intensive exchange between Germany and the region, the Center for Advanced Studies also strengthens cooperation in Latin American research in German-speaking countries. Since the start of the project on March 1, 2017, an infrastructure has been set up for this purpose and work has been carried out on the research program "Coping with Crises: Transdicipinary Perspectives from Latin America", which allows the center to work on the central issues of CALAS within the various formats with international fellows . To this end, it regularly announces research grants for individual and tandem fellowships as well as research groups, and organizes specialist meetings and conferences at all of its locations.

According to CALAS, it is important to use its research formats to promote scientific dialogue on various levels: interregional (especially between Germany and Latin America, but also within the various countries and regions of Latin America), interdisciplinary , intergenerational and also intercultural with regard to the Dialogue with non-academic forms of knowledge and epistemologies .
