Marie Taglioni the Elder (born April 23, 1804 in Stockholm , Sweden , † April 22, 1884 in Marseille ) was an Italian dancer.

Life

Marie Taglioni was the first star of romantic ballet . She is considered the first master of pointe dance . Her world career began when she appeared at the Paris Opera in 1832 in the ballet La Sylphide by Jean Schneitzhoeffer . The choreographer of the piece was her father, Filippo Taglioni .

On September 18, 1832, she married Jean-Pierre Victor Albert Gilbert de Voisins in London (date of birth unknown, died 1863). She had two children with him: Marie (1835–1901, married to Alexander Troubetzkoy, 1813–1889) and Georges-Philippe (1843–1893, married to Sozonga Rallli, died 1906 in Paris).

Marie Taglioni left the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris in 1837 and went to Saint Petersburg to the Mariinsky Ballet .

In 1847 she retired as a dancer, but continued to work as a dance teacher. Her brother Paul Taglioni was also a famous dancer and ballet master of the royal ballet troupe in Berlin.

Marie Taglioni's only work as a choreographer was the ballet Le Papillon by Jacques Offenbach for the dancer Emma Livry, whom she sponsored .

Johann Strauss dedicated the Marie Taglioni polka to her niece Marie Taglioni (1833–1891) .
