Maria Terezinha Dias da Silva Viegas (born October 3, 1964 in Laclubar , Portuguese Timor ) is a politician from East Timor . She is a member of the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT) party. From 2012 to 2017 she was State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs.

Career

Viegas was a nurse who wanted his children to get a good education. Maria Terezinha Viegas graduated from the Agricultural Academy in Sumarang ( Central Java ) in 1989 .

From 1991 to 1999 Viegas worked in the Department of Agriculture in Dili . At the same time, she was involved in the resistance against the Indonesian occupation, relayed messages and sent supplies to the resistance fighters. In the resistance, Viegas also met her husband Ma'huno Bulerek Karathayano , who was captured by the Indonesians shortly afterwards in April 1993. In 1995 Ma'huno was released due to an amnesty. He and Viegas were married in 1996. They have three children together.

After the Indonesians left, Viegas took the course for agricultural engineers at the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL). She now has a bachelor's degree . In 2000/2001, Viegas was a member of the National Council (NC), the country's transitional parliament, as a representative of the peasantry . She belonged to the non-governmental organization ETVFA (East Timor Veterinary, Fisheries and Forestry), which sent East Timorese to Portugal and Malaysia to train them in agriculture. She also looked after her husband, who was still suffering from the aftermath of a blow he received in November 1999.

From 2001 to 2007 Viegas was a member of FRETILIN in the national parliament of East Timor . During this time she was a deputy secretary and a member of the parliamentary presidium as parliamentary secretary. After the new elections in 2007 , Viegas sat for another legislative period until 2012 for the CNRT in parliament and was a member of the Commission for Economy, Finance and Anti-Corruption (Commission C).

On August 8, 2012, she was sworn in as State Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs. She kept the post after the government reshuffle on February 16, 2015.

In the 2017 parliamentary elections , Viegas was ranked third on the CNRT's list and succeeded in re-entering the national parliament as a member. She left the cabinet when the VII government took office . In Parliament she was a member of the Public Finance Commission (Commission C). Since September 2017, Viegas has been a delegate of the National Group of the National Parliament to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese- Speaking Countries (CPLP). In the early elections in 2018 , Viegas was ninth in the Aliança para Mudança e Progresso (AMP), to which the CNRT also belongs, and came back to parliament. On June 14th, Viegas was elected Secretary of the Presidium of Parliament. She held the office until 2020.

In 2018, Viegas was elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Federação Futebol Timor-Leste (FFTL).
