Marija Vladimirovna Ender ( Russian Мария Владимировна Эндер ; * 1897 in Saint Petersburg , † 1942 in Leningrad ) was a Russian painter .

Life

Marija Ender was the daughter of a gardener of German descent . Her great-grandfather was a Saxon glassmaker who settled in St. Petersburg. Like her siblings Boris (1893–1960), Ksenija (1895–1942) and Juri (1898–1963), she attended the Petri School in St. Petersburg , showed strong artistic inclinations and was very interested in music, poetry and theater.

Marija Ender studied philology in Petrograd in the Pedagogical Institute from 1915 to 1918 and then from 1918 to 1922 art in the Free Artistic Workshops (SWOMAS) (successor organization to the Imperial Art Academy ) with Kazimir Malevich and Mikhail Vasilyevich Matyushin , whom she met in 1916, and especially in Matyushins Workshop for spatial realism , so that in 1923 she joined Matjuschin's avant-garde Sorwed (seeing and leading) group, like her siblings Boris and Ksenija. Some of her works were shown in 1923 at the painting exhibition Petrograd painters of all directions , in 1924 at the Fourteenth Biennale di Venezia , and in 2017 at documenta 14 .

In 1923 Marija Ender worked in the Museum of Art Education in Petrograd and also in the department for organic culture of the State Institute for Artistic Culture headed by Matjuschin (until 1926), where she headed the laboratory for the peripheral perception of color forms from 1925–1926 . From 1927 she worked in the Physico-Physiological Laboratory of the Institute for Art History .

Ender was a lecturer in color theory at the Institute for Proletarian Fine Art (1929-1932), at the Institute for Civil Aviation (1930), at the Leningrad Institute for Urban Development and at the Technical University of Art and Industry (1930). In addition, she studied the perception of colors at the Leningrad Brain Research Institute and worked as a consultant for colored building design in Leningrad. In 1932 she assisted Matjuschin in his study Legality of changing color combinations: reference work for colors . She and her brother participated in the design of the USSR pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and at the World Exhibition in New York in 1939 . 1938–1939 she designed together with her brother Boris and E. Ja. Astafew the Leningrad Pavilion at the All Union Exhibition of Economics of the USSR in Moscow.

She died in 1942 during the siege of Leningrad and was buried in a mass grave.
