The Mariabründlkapelle von Groißenbrunn was a pilgrimage chapel in Marchfeld in Lower Austria . Today there is a spring here , adorned with a statue of the Virgin Mary , which is said to have healing powers. The parish church of Groißenbrunn has taken on the role of the pilgrimage church.

history

Mariabründl Chapel

On the occasion of a pilgrimage to a brick cross near the village on the feast day of St. Florian , the residents of Groißenbrunn discovered a spring in 1718 that apparently had only recently sprung. This became the goal of the pilgrimages.

In order to be able to replace the dilapidated cross with a chapel, a fundraising was carried out. The Hof Palace , which is part of Groißenbrunn, was also included in this collection , where construction work was also carried out.

Due to a lack of money, however, the construction of the chapel had to be interrupted. Prince Eugene of Savoy is said to have come across the abandoned construction site by chance and to have the chapel completed at his own expense.

An image of the Virgin Mary, damaged by the Turks in 1683 and kept in Schloss Hof, was brought to the Mariabründl Chapel as a miraculous image. The first pilgrimage of the local population to the new chapel took place on May 4, 1719. Subsequently, the chapel with the image of the Virgin Mary became the destination of numerous pilgrimages from other Marchfeld communities.

Presumably at the instigation of Maria Theresa , the chapel was restored in 1763. As the preservation of the chapel was felt to be too expensive, it was decided to demolish it in 1769. On September 1, 1771, the miraculous image, the wrought iron gate and the oak door of the chapel were transferred to the parish church of Groißenbrunn.

Succession

In 1848 a small chapel was built at the source and a statue of the Virgin Mary with a child was placed in it. During the fighting in 1945 the structure suffered severe damage. Due to dilapidation, this chapel was demolished in 1969. The statue of the Virgin Mary was placed in the parish church.

In the same year, the rectangular pond in front of the spring was dredged and the banks were redesigned and two pillars from the Eggenburg area were erected. Above the source, a statue of Mary made of granite by the sculptor Carl Hermann was placed on a retaining wall.

The spring water is said to have healing properties for eye diseases and animal diseases. The Bründl experiences the strongest influx of pilgrims, mainly from Marchfeld, especially at Whitsun and in May .

Pilgrimage

After the completion of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the March ( bicycle bridge of freedom ), a pilgrimage route has linked the two pilgrimage sites Groißenbrunn and Marianka since 2014 . The pilgrimage route runs through the cadastral parishes of Groißenbrunn and Schloßhof in Lower Austria, the districts of Bratislava Devínska Nová Ves and Záhorská Bystrica , and through the parish of Marianka in Slovakia. The pilgrimage route is about 15 km.
