Mariano Fernández de Echeverría y Veytia (born July 16, 1718 in Puebla , Mexico ; † February 25, 1780 (according to other sources 1779 ) there) was a Mexican historian who researched the pre-Columbian history of Mexico.

Life

Mariano Veytia came from a family of lawyers who had settled in Puebla.

Mariano Veytia began to study philosophy at the age of 15. In 1736 he completed his legal training in civil law and was admitted to the Real Audiencia of Mexico in 1737 with a special permit from the Viceroy Juan Antonio de Vizarrón y Eguiarreta .

In 1737 he traveled to Spain and began to write down his travel experiences. He traveled to Europe until 1739 and got to know France , Holland , Italy and Portugal . He came to England and Palestine . In 1742 he was inducted into the Order of Santiago in Madrid .

After returning to Mexico, he entered the San Agustín Monastery of Puebla in 1768. There he devoted himself to the studies of the early history of Mexico. He was able to access the notes and the original material that had been collected by Lorenzo Boturini de Benaducci and confiscated by the colonial administration in 1743.

On his death he left behind extensive manuscripts on the history of his hometown and pre-Columbian Mexico. Viceroy Martín de Mayorga ordered the manuscripts to be collected and preserved in order to save them from deterioration.

His book Baluartes de México was published posthumously in 1820 . His main work, Historia Antigua de México, followed in 1836 . Another treatise on church history, Historia Eclesiástica , remained unpublished.

estate

Parts of Boturini's notes and sources came into the hands of Eugène Goupil , who bequeathed them to the Paris National Library.
